EMDR Therapy in North Carolina
Trauma and painful experiences can continue affecting your thoughts, emotions, relationships, and sense of safety long after the event has passed. EMDR is an evidence based therapy that can help the brain process distressing experiences and reduce the intensity of triggers.
EMDR is available in person in Jefferson and Boone, with secure telehealth available throughout North Carolina when clinically appropriate.

What is EMDR?
EMDR, or Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, is a structured therapy designed to help the brain process distressing memories and experiences. During EMDR, bilateral stimulation such as guided eye movements may be used while you focus on specific memories, thoughts, emotions, or body sensations.
The goal is not to erase the memory. Instead, EMDR can help reduce the emotional intensity attached to it so the experience feels more like something that happened in the past rather than something your mind and body are still reacting to in the present.
How EMDR Helps
EMDR can help reduce the distress connected to painful memories, triggers, and experiences that continue to feel emotionally present. Through a structured process, clients may begin to experience less emotional intensity, greater perspective, and improved ability to respond in the present rather than react from the past.
Reduce Emotional Intensity
Memories and triggers may become less overwhelming or reactive.
Improve Perspective
Clients may be better able to understand past experiences without feeling consumed by them.
Strengthen Emotional Regulation
EMDR can support greater stability when difficult thoughts, emotions, or reminders arise.
How EMDR May Support Recovery
For some clients, substance use is connected to painful experiences, emotional distress, or triggers that feel difficult to manage. When clinically appropriate, EMDR may be used as part of treatment to address these underlying experiences and support recovery.
Reduce Trigger Reactivity
Work toward reducing the emotional intensity connected to memories, situations, or experiences that may contribute to cravings.
Address Underlying Experiences
Process distressing experiences that may be connected to substance use or other coping patterns.
Strengthen Recovery Skills
